The Rock Retreat gives Download Festival fans an alternative to camping in the main festival campsites.
Instead, you stay at Melbourne Hall and travel to and from Download Festival using the shuttle service.
For people who enjoy the festival but would prefer somewhere a little calmer to return to at the end of the night, Rock Retreat can be a great alternative to standard Download camping.

Rock Retreat at Melbourne Hall – What to Expect
Based on the Rock Retreat experience in previous years, campers have been able to enjoy a number of benefits compared with staying in the main Download Festival campsites.

Previous Rock Retreat Camping Rules
The following rules and arrangements have applied to Rock Retreat in previous years. They are useful as a guide, but you should check the final 2027 campsite rules before travelling.
- Maximum pitch sizes have applied.
- Gazebos have previously been permitted for larger groups sharing a tent.
- Restrictions have applied to gas canisters and petrol-fuelled cooking equipment.
- Rock Retreat does not provide access to the Download Guest Area or RIP campsites.
- Campers are asked to keep noise to a minimum late at night.
Getting to Download Festival from Melbourne Hall
One of the biggest differences between Rock Retreat and standard Download camping is that you aren’t staying immediately next to the festival arena.
Instead, Rock Retreat has previously operated a dedicated shuttle bus service taking campers between Melbourne Hall and Download Festival.
From our own experience, the shuttle buses were one of the strongest parts of Rock Retreat. Waiting times were generally short and getting back to Melbourne Hall after the festival was straightforward.

Our Rock Retreat at Melbourne Hall Review – Is It Worth It?
We’ve previously stayed at the Rock Retreat at Melbourne Hall, so this part of the page is based on our own experience rather than simply repeating the official description.
While some facilities and arrangements may be different for Download Festival 2027, our experience should give you a good idea of what staying at Melbourne Hall is actually like.

Parking – 9/10
The convenience of being able to park close to your tent was a game-changer for us.
Rather than carrying all your camping equipment a long distance from the car, having the vehicle nearby made arriving, setting up camp and packing everything away again considerably easier.
We also experienced minimal waiting times getting into the campsite.
Toilets and Showers – 8/10
The facilities were another big advantage of staying at Rock Retreat.
We found the showers and toilets clean and the queues were generally short – we rarely waited more than around five minutes.
There was also electricity available for certain essential requirements, such as medical equipment, which was a useful addition.
Rock Retreat Shuttle Buses – 9/10
We were really impressed with the shuttle bus service.
Waiting times were generally short, usually no more than around ten minutes during our stay, and the drivers were friendly.
It made travelling between Melbourne Hall and Download Festival much easier than we initially expected.
Getting to the Download Arena – 8/10
Despite staying away from the main Download campsites, getting to the festival didn’t feel particularly difficult.
Once we’d used the shuttle service, the remaining walk to the arena was around 15 minutes during our visit.
Surprisingly, this could feel quicker than getting to the arena from some areas within the main Download Festival campsites.
Food – 7/10
Food was probably one of the weaker areas during our stay.
The on-site food stand offered things such as breakfast baps, burgers and pizzas, but we felt the overall choice was fairly limited.
A little more variety would have made a noticeable difference.
Waste Management – 6/10
This was the area we thought needed the most improvement.
More bins and waste points positioned around the campsite would have made keeping the camping area clean considerably easier.
Hopefully this is something that continues to improve in future years.
Is Download Festival Rock Retreat Worth It?
Based on our experience, yes – particularly if you enjoy Download Festival but want a quieter and slightly more comfortable camping experience.
The biggest advantages for us were being able to park close to the tent, the good toilet and shower facilities and the shuttle bus service.
It felt considerably less hectic than staying in the main Download campsites while still allowing us to enjoy the full festival.
The main negatives during our stay were the limited food choices and waste facilities, although these are both things that could be different for Download Festival 2027.

If you want the full Download Festival weekend but prefer a quieter campsite, better facilities and the convenience of parking close to your tent, Rock Retreat at Melbourne Hall is well worth considering for Download Festival 2027.
Our previous stay scored 8.5/10 overall. The parking, facilities and shuttle buses were the highlights and, based on our experience, we’d happily consider staying at Melbourne Hall again.
